ABOUT THE ROLE

As the Fleet Mechanic, you will perform hands-on maintenance and repair on a fleet of more than 25 vehicles and 30 machines, plus small equipment and trailers, in both diesel and gasoline. Work is assigned through the shop queue, with priorities set by the operations team. This role also maintains complete maintenance records, sourced parts and supplies, managed warranty claims, and keeps the shop clean and organized. Outlined below are the responsibilities of the Fleet Mechanic.

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

  • Diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline engines on heavy equipment, including Kubota, Bobcat, and Vermeer machines.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, electrical, fuel, and drivetrain systems.
  • Repair small gas engines and handheld landscape equipment.
  • Use diagnostic software, scan tools, and service manuals to identify root causes and verify repairs.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and structural repairs on equipment, attachments, and trailers.
  • Respond to jobsite breakdowns to return crews to work quickly.

FLEET AND TRAILER MAINTENANCE

  • Maintain and repair pickups, dump trucks, flatbeds, and service vehicles.
  • Service brakes, suspension, steering, drivetrain, and HVAC systems.
  • Inspect and repair trailers, including brakes, bearings, lighting, decking, couplers, and structural welds.
  • Perform tire repair, changing, balancing, and replacement using in-house equipment.
  • Track vehicle registrations and tags, and flag renewals in advance.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance based on hour meter, mileage, and manufacturer intervals.
  • Use tracker and diagnostic data to monitor upcoming service and prevent missed intervals.
  • Complete seasonal readiness work, including winterization and pre-season equipment checks.
  • Coordinate with the operations team to schedule maintenance with minimal disruption to field crews.

PARTS, VENDORS, AND WARRANTY

  • Source parts and supplies based on price, quality, and availability.
  • Maintain an organized, labeled parts and consumables inventory with minimum stock levels on high-use items.
  • Manage warranty claims, core returns, and dealer service work through resolution.
  • Coordinate outside repairs when work exceeds shop capability, and verify quality on return.

DOCUMENTATION AND COMMUNICATION

  • Complete all required maintenance logs and service records accurately and at the time work is performed.
  • Maintain a complete service history for each unit, including hours, mileage, parts, labor, and cost.
  • Report equipment status daily so operations knows what is available, what is down, and when it will return.
  • Provide repair history and cost information to support leadership’s repair-versus-replace decisions.
  • Escalate major repairs, safety concerns, and significant expenditures to the Director of Operations before work begins.

SHOP ORGANIZATION AND SAFETY

  • Keep the shop, wash bay, and yard clean, orderly, and organized at all times.
  • Return tools and equipment to designated locations and restore shop order at the end of each day.
  • Maintain shop tools, lifts, welders, air systems, and diagnostic equipment in safe working order.
  • Follow proper handling, storage, and disposal procedures for fuels, oils, coolants, and other hazardous materials.
  • Follow all PPE, lockout, and shop safety protocols, and release no unit to the field that is unsafe to operate.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Proven experience maintaining and repairing diesel and gasoline engines, heavy equipment, trucks, and trailers.
  • Kubota, Bobcat, and Vermeer experience preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic ability across hydraulic, electrical, and engine systems.
  • Ability to read service manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.
  • Welding and fabrication skills preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and discipline in completing maintenance records.
  • Ability to manage a full workload independently according to priorities set by operations.
  • Basic computer skills for service records and parts lookup.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; CDL a plus.
  • Personal hand tools preferred; diagnostic and shop tooling provided.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to regularly lift and handle heavy parts, tires, and components.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and reach for extended periods in shop and outdoor conditions.

REPORTING, COMPENSATION, AND BENEFITS

  • This role reports to the Director of Operations, with work priorities set by the operations team.
  • Compensation would range from $26.00 to $36.00 per hour, based on experience, certifications, and tools.
  • Full-time, year-round position paid weekly, typically 40–45 hours across four to five days, with additional hours as equipment needs require.
